Aid for Developing Countries (AFDC) is a non-profit 501.c.3 corporation set up for the express purpose of providing humanitarian assistance to disadvantaged people in developing countries.

Our current efforts are concentrated on the Creve area in the Northwest Department of Haiti. This area is characterized by a very high unemployment rate (estimated at 80%), a high illiteracy rate (appr. 80%), and an average income around 2 US$/day. Because of damages from recent hurricanes Ike and Katrina and a drought in 2009, there is a major shortage of food throughout the area with some people going for days without sufficient food.

The recent earthquake in Port-au-Prince did not cause structural damage in the Creve area but does impact the area by limiting the availability of food and personal care items. The public school system is almost non-existent and the educational program is highly deficient in the public schools that do exist. Most of the better schools are operated by churches with funds supplied through donations from the US and other countries. There are no public water services, no public electrical power sources, very poor communication services, and the roads, if in the US, would be considered impassable. Therefore, there are few places in the world that are in greater need of assistance that the citizens of the Creve area of NW Haiti.

If you share our concern for the health and welfare of the people of NW Haiti, please provide whatever assistance you can to support to one of the activities in the menu to the left.

Notes from Haiti Trip PDF Print E-mail

I have struggled to write words for our return from Haiti this past week.  I cannot describe the devastation in Haiti in one word.  I cannot even describe it in hundreds of words.  I sometimes could not even believe my own eyes the squalor that these people have to live in since the earthquake struck. A few pictures from our trip can be found here.

Our team arrived in Port Au Prince on Friday March 12th and the old familiar smells and sights of a forgotten land rushed into my senses.  But this time it was accompanied by new elements.  Entire blocks of buildings leveled.  Tent cities and cardboard shacks erected wherever allowed by topography.  If there was a space to put up a lean-to such as a highway median, it was there.  One of our team members, BMA missionary Michael Poirier from Quebec Canada, visited a family in Port whose relatives go to his church in Canada.  There were 10 people living in one room of less than 80 square feet.  The great news from that encounter was that nine of them accepted Christ while Michael was there!  The tenth was a two-year-old.

We traveled to the northwest area where Brother Francois Norcilus is located.  There has been an increase in population because of the earthquake.  Hundreds of refugees are coming to the area to live with families.  While we were there, we conducted a medical clinic and animal clinic and did work on a water well.  During the days we were there we treated over 800 people in four days.  The local dentist was also on hand and he pulled over 90 teeth.  In fact he pulled teeth until he ran out of pain killers.  The animal clinic was a great way to reach out to the community and allow people to have healthier animals for a healthier food source and work animals.  The water well is even now beginning its rehabilitation and will soon be a source of clean water for the community.

But the most important numbers that we can relate are the ten people who were saved and hundreds counseled about the loss of people and property.  Many stories were told of the loss of a husband, child, or entire families. I cannot relate them all, but many are etched on my mind and will not be removed.

The most important person on this trip was Jesus Christ.  He was glorified and lifted up!  Nothing was possible without His intervention and leadership.  We always started, ended, and also filled our day, with prayer to Him.  To God be the glory, great things He hath done!

Our team consisted of the following members; BMMI members Dr Ralph Izard and Jim Brewer from Little Rock, James Earl from Indiana, Michael Poirier and Michael Barton from Quebec, Canada, and Omar Castillo and Romano Polino from the Dominican Republic, and Dr John Ladd from Mexico.  Also Aid for Developing Countries members Dr Paul Smith of Auburn, AL, Jim Young of Springdale, AR, Brodey and Mona Collins of Siloam Springs, AR, Justin Williams of Bella Vista, AR, Gina Tynes of Rogers, AR, and Bill and Renita Moore of Bentonville, AR.

I will not be able to tell of all the things that God walked us through while we were there, but He was there all the time.  And He remains there to comfort the wounded and needy.

Please be in prayer for the people of Haiti.  The rainy season is beginning and many people are in peril.  There was an article in the paper about the rain we received on Friday while we were there.  Over one hundred people were washed away in Port Au Prince and it will only get worse.  Please ask God for the salvation of souls and the deliverance of His people there in Haiti.  If you would like to hear more about our trip, please contact Bill Moore at AFDC at 479-426-3029 or by email: bill [at] adfc-haiti [dot] org.
